The Skills To Overcome VUCA


Our world is one marked by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, also known as VUCA. In order to not only stay relevant but to also expand their businesses, today’s organizational leaders need to be able to identify and navigate around VUCA forces such as economic crises, fluctuating prices and currencies, generational shifts in the workforce, security breaches, and changing regulations, to name a few.

Those who master VUCA preparedness tend to be better decision makers, more confident and more adaptable. Leaders should not only make sure they respond effectively to VUCA forces, but that their employees can too.

Leveraging extensive research on current business leadership practices, DDI, in its 2015 Global Leadership Forecast1 identified four skills that have a great impact on leader preparedness and confidence in addressing VUCA challenges:

  • Managing and introducing change
  • Building consensus and commitment
  • Inspiring others toward a challenging future vision
  • Leading across generations

Those who have mastered these skills feel and display confidence, and are able to reduce discord and misunderstandings, inspire others, and forge a shared sense of purpose despite diverse employee viewpoints and motivations.

The world is getting more volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. The leaders of tomorrow need to be prepared to navigate these challenges.
