Embedding Champions of Culture


TMC has helped numerous companies increase their cross-cultural communication and functioning to lead to better business results and greater employee satisfaction. One such engagement was with a company that was presented with a multi-million dollar presale opportunity, but lost the bid. The CEO and other high-level leaders in the company asked TMC for help in making sure another such opportunity would not be squandered. TMC stepped in as an organizational partner and was able to pinpoint that there was a breakdown on the functional level within the organization, with different teams not being able to effectively communicate and collaborate with the company’s customers. Our idea was to help the company embed champions of culture who could help increase cross-functional understanding and spur communicative dialogue from within.

Three years on, the company had embedded practitioners across the organization in all of its worldwide locations, and in so doing created a shared common language based on a non-judgmental vocabulary. The company witnessed a shift from a host of regional cultures within the company to one very inclusive and cooperative culture that stretched across its branches. There was a marked decrease in the cultural mishaps that were occurring between members of different functions within the organization and those located in different countries, and there was a huge leap in communications. We were able to map out a full picture of the organization from top to bottom and open up channels between levels, with information being filtered and distilled from across the enterprise. There was an enhancement of style switching capabilities among employees and an increase in cultural dialogue, which led to them reporting that they felt better understood. This led to increased productivity.

The lost bid, while an unhappy occurrence for the company, led it to pursue change. With TMC’s intervention and continued guidance, the company had a major internal turnaround in the way its employees and departments interacted, based on the frameworks provided by the Cultural Orientations Approach. The company never let a major opportunity pass it by again.
