What impact does social learning have on organizations?

5/20/2014

Social media is forever changing the face of learning. Eighty percent of corporate knowledge transfer takes place through on-the-job interactions, whether that’s synchronous, asynchronous, virtual or face-to-face. Borders of space and time around learning and knowledge transfer are completely disappearing. Conversations about controversial topics are happening, whether corporate leaders engage in those conversations or not. Dissatisfaction in the workplace travels very quickly and can really break a learning initiative.

All of this means that social learning is a constructive approach for leaders to leverage.  With social learning, they can make sure their employees develop the skills necessary to work in the modern, globalized world and that they stay active members of the company. Learning that engages participants and allows them to create solutions and be part of the knowledge transfer together with their cohorts is critical to developing stronger capabilities inside an organization.
