Tips for Developing Self-Awareness


Talk the Talk – Practice leveraging the Cultural Orientations Model (COM) vocabulary at every opportunity. This model provides a safe and neutral vocabulary to overcome differences through dialogue.

Assume the Best Intentions – Work-place frustrations are oftentimes unintended consequences of opposing preferences.

Admit Mistakes – Be willing to admit mistakes or missteps as you make them. Taking responsibility for your actions and apologizing for mistakes demonstrates the value you place on openness and accountability.

Listen to Your Inner Voice – Find a way to bring underlying cultural assumptions to the surface by being more attentive to your thoughts and judgments.

Leverage Resources – Form the habit of accessing the Cultural Navigator and other resources frequently.

Validate, Validate, Validate – Your preferences and those of your colleagues can change with new experiences, so validate at every opportunity.
