Culture, Globalization and Employee Learning

Individually, employees have been doing more with less for over half a decade now, since the global economic crisis began. And this won’t change. Distractions abound, we have information overload and need to manage the rapid-succession processing of tasks. All this reduces productivity. This means that skills around parallel processing and multitasking are absolutely essential, and that flexibility is emerging as a key talent.  

In terms of teams and working groups, today’s business leaders are exchanging “command and control” for “coordinate and cultivate” as a leadership mantra. On the organizational level, management structures are changing from being hierarchical to being much more compartmentalized, cross-functional and horizontal. As managers no longer administer systems as much as they used to, individuals and teams need to direct themselves and spur their own learning. And as decentralization is giving way to multi-centralization with multiple points of authority, employees need to learn how to navigate their own workplaces’ structures.

The shifting nature of the modern working world demands that employees keep learning while on the job to keep up with the changing structure and speed of work life.
