Employee Mobility and Learning


Here are a couple of statistics to help you grasp the scale of mobility in the modern workforce.

  • At least 40% of the global workforce has some sort of flexible work arrangement.
  • Virtual workers are found to have more employee satisfaction than their office-bound peers.
  • According to the international Data Corporation’s Annual Tracker, Europe has the lowest percentage of mobile workers, at 12%, followed by Asia (with the exception of Japan), with 19%, and the Americas, with 22%. The highest mobile worker saturation rate is in Japan, with 65% of the workforce having some sort of flexibility arrangement.

So with this in mind, leaders and their employees have to focus on the skills needed to work in a globally dispersed working environment. These include:

  • Digital skills (including the ability to work virtually)
  • Agile thinking skills (in the volatile, unpredictable, complex and ambiguous world)
  • Interpersonal and communication skills (including being able to communicate across cultures and engage in virtual teaming)
  • Global operating skills (the ability to manage a diverse group)

With more of their workforce located around the world, employers need to select employees who have the skills and knowledge necessary to work across borders and across cultures.
