The Self-Awareness Turning Point


When I first took my COI assessment, I was definitely in denial. I have lived in the US for over 25 years, and, having lived in many different countries before that, I automatically assumed that I was culturally competent and knew my biases and preferences rather well.

For example, I thought I had a “doing” preference for managing tasks, and a “direct” approach to discussions and handling conflict.

Wrong! My COI report showed a strong “being” preference and a mild “indirect” preference. This was a surprise to me. It was only after monitoring my behaviors and continuously reflecting on some of the feedback I received that I was able to affirm that these were indeed my preferences.

A key takeaway for me was the understanding that our cultural preferences are deeply rooted in our subconscious, and it requires commitment, time and effort to bring these to the surface.

Once I understood this, I began to see how my colleagues perceived me, and that was the turning point for me.
