Cultural Competence as the First Step


The benefits of leveraging cultural competence are huge. However, in today’s complex business environment, cultural knowledge by itself is not enough.

Cultural knowledge means defining and interpreting patterns, not universal truths. Everyone must make an effort to understand these patterns and find a way to interpret the same, remembering that a single experience with a cultural difference only tells us about that encounter.

This process can be challenging and takes time to develop. However, with trial and error, patience and a deep commitment to self-discovery, practice and adjustment, over time it does get easier and easier.
