Using Cultural Orientations Assessments to Increase Efficiency

Here is an example of how using the COI Assessment can help teams function more efficiently.

A team’s group aggregate COI report suggests that there is a strong single-focus orientation toward working within the group, with a few outliers on the multi-focus preference side.

Most members of this group may emphasize structuring and sequencing tasks, issues and relationships; and focusing on and discussing one topic at a time. However, those who have a multi-focus preference may feel this system is too rigid, constraining and inefficient.

The team may benefit from exploring potential cultural gaps and blind spots, particularly the tendency to appear over-structured and inflexible, and the tendency to rely on sequential processing when parallel processing may be quicker or simpler.

These insights should be addressed either at the onset of the relevant project, or as needed whenever progress is hindered by opposing preferences.

When everyone’s cultural orientations are on the table at the beginning of a project, teams can avoid pitfalls that come with a lack of cross-cultural understanding.
