The Cost of Sending an Employee Abroad

Roughly two-thirds of US companies report spending two to three times the assignee’s annual salary on each traditional expatriate assignment, according to the Worldwide ERC Global Talent Mobility Study (2012). In Europe, the same study shows some companies spend four times an employee’s salary on an expatriate assignment.

Strong expatriate support and preparations can help organizations ensure that the dollars spent on their expatriate assignments are invested wisely. In particular, resources should be allocated to education and informational tools at the beginning of an expatriate assignment and throughout the assignment to improve the chances of the expatriate’s success.
